Colin Turkington was fastest in a sedate second British Touring Car Championship practice session at Brands Hatch, ahead of team-mate Jason Plato and Gordon Shedden.
The top three in the championship were separated by 0.168s in the final practice session of the season, with Turkington taking top honours in his Team BMR Volkswagen CC.
Turkington led for much of the session with a 1:31.461s, but improved in the last quarter of the session to record a best time of 1:31.302s.
Championship leader Shedden then went second quickest, before he was edged out by 0.001s by nearest title rival Plato.
Andy Priaulx followed up his competitive showing in first practice with fourth in his West Surrey Racing BMW 125i, narrowly ahead of Jack Goff, who was similarly impressive in his MG6 GT.
He was trailed by team-mate Andrew Jordan, while Tom Ingram, Mat Jackson and Matt Neal were seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
Alain Menu completed the top ten with a 1:31.722s, the Swiss getting within 0.420s of table-topping team-mate Turkington with a raft of improvements towards the end of the session.
The final BTCC qualifying session of the season gets underway at 15:40 BST.
