Stefano Comini took pole position in qualifying for the TCR International Series in Singapore, with the Target Competition driver beating WestCoast Racing’s Gianni Morbidelli by just 0.016 seconds.
Comini had earlier been second fastest in Q1, before the Swiss driver went three tenths quicker in Q2 to secure his first pole position of the season and gain five crucial bonus points which move him into the lead of the championship.
Morbidelli improved on his Q1 time to put his car on the front row of the grid in Q2, with his Honda team-mate Kevin Gleason just behind in third.
Sergey Afanasyev was the top Craft-Bamboo Racing driver in fourth, ahead of team-mate Pepe Oriola in fifth. The Spaniard had earlier been fastest in both of Friday’s free practice sessions, but he failed to find the pace in qualifying, ending up 0.356 seconds off the pace.
TCR rookie Loris Hezemans was sixth, despite having earlier topped the Q1 session in his Target Competition SEAT León.
Both of Engstler Motorsport’s Volkswagen Golf TCR cars made it into Q2, with Mikhail Grachev qualifying in seventh, ahead of SEAT team-mate Lorenzo Veglia in eighth.
Craft-Bamboo Racing’s Jordi Gené and the second Engstler Volkswagen of Tomas Engström completed the top ten, securing the front row of the grid for the reverse-grid second race.
Just missing out on the reverse grid were WestCoast Racing’s René Münnich in 11th and Campos Racing’s Fernando Monje in 12th.
Roadstar Racing’s George Chou was the leading driver in the TCR Asia Series section, putting his SEAT in 13th on the grid and narrowly missing out on Q2.
The Top Run Motorsport Subaru of Luca Rangoni failed to complete a lap following the logistical problems experienced by the team earlier in the week.
