Miguel Molina takes historic maiden DTM win in dominant fashion

Team Abt Sportsline’s Miguel Molina took his first career win in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), as race 16 of the Nürburgring brought more drama to the 2015 championship in its penultimate weekend.

The Team Abt Sportsline driver also became the first Spanish driver to take victory in the DTM’s thirty-one year history, with this season alone having 12 different winners in the 16 races so far.

Molina finished 7.5 seconds ahead of Paul Di Resta, having started from pole position, with BMW’s Bruno Spengler completing the podium. This was after a chaotic start at turn one brought out the Safety Car for the second time during the weekend..

Tom Blomqvist took his second top ten finish of the season, as the Briton finished fourth, ahead of a hot-headed Pascal Wehrlein, who further extends his championship lead ahead of the season finale at Hockenheim in three weeks’ time.

Robert Wickens, Gary Paffett and Timo Scheider retired in the early goings, with the latter ending up beached in the gravel on the very first lap.

Multiple battles carried on throughout the 60-mintue race, including the likes of points leader Pascal Wehrlein, Daniel Juncadella and Maximillian Götz going three-wide at certain times.

But a barrage of pit stops caused problems for the likes of Wehrlein and title contender Mattias Ekström, meant the pair dropped several places as a result. Wehrlein, himself, was very vocal about the calls from his race engineer, who was trying to calm him down.

Title hopeful Edoardo Mortara was battling with Timo Glock with 20 minutes left to go, but the Italian’s race was to come to an abrupt end. The BMW driver appeared to push him into the barriers, forcing Mortara to retire, with Glock being handed a drive-through penalty.

Maximiilian Götz finished in sixth, taking his second top ten finish in a row, ahead of 2013 champion Mike Rockenfeller. Farfus would end up eighth ahead of a charging Tomczyk, with Daniel Juncadella rounding out the top ten.

Juncadella had to fight off Mattias Ekström for the final points scoring place until the bitter end, with the Swede now having scored no points for the seventh time this season.

Outgoing champion Marco Wittmann would only pace as high as 18th, behind Audi’s Nico Müller and Jamie Green in 16th and 17th. Race one winner Maxime Martin finished 13th, behind Adrien Tambay and ahead of Christian Vietoris, with Lucas Auer finishing in 19th, ahead of Timo Glock.

Pascal Wehrlein now has 165 points, and still leads the drivers’ standings, as Mortara and Ekström remain in second and third place on 128 and 127 points respectively. Another good points haul from the 20-year-old could see him wrap up the title in the first race at Hockenheim.

BMW now leads the manufacturer standings on 554 points, with Mercedes 53 points behind, whilst Audi Sport are on 472 in last place.

The final race weekend of the 2015 DTM season takes place at the famed Hockenheimring in three weeks’ time, from the 16th to 18th of October.
