Audi Sport’s Mattias Ekström had to fight through what was a difficult Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) weekend at Oschersleben, as the Team Abt Sportsline driver had to settle for no points.
The two-time champion, who has been in the series for the last 15 years, says that even after all this time, he keeps on “experiencing new things,” but still remains ultimately positive.
“Here at Oschersleben, for instance, I can find a positive for the first time in my career in not having scored a single point,”said the 35-year-old, who was been competitive and consistent for the majority of the season.
“Because that means I can unload ten kilos of success ballast for the next weekend, which will give me the chance to attack the competition again.”
The true pace of the RS5 DTM has been evident with Ekström, Edoardo Mortara and Jamie Green being contenders for this year’s drivers’ title, where Pascal Wehrlein leads Ekström by 14 points.
“We’ve got everything it takes to strike back at the Nürburgring,” he explained.
“We’re going to keep our cool and our concentration and are hoping for two race days without any special incidents or changeable weather.”
Ekström will now be heading to Barcelona for the next round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship this weekend, before heading to the Eifel mountains for the penultimate round of the championship.
