Italian driver Luca Rangoni will race the completed Top Run Motorsport Subaru Impreza WRX in the TCR International Series race in Singapore, where the car will make its official début.
Rangoni tested the car along with test drivers Roberto Russo and Gian Maria Gabbiani at Franciacorta earlier in the week, as the team decided who to hand the car to for its first public outing.
Rangoni has previous top-level touring car experience, having raced in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in 2006 and 2007, claiming a best finish of second overall in independent machinery, out of a total of three podiums.
“We finally chose Luca because we have worked together successfully in the past, when he helped us to develop the Mercedes in the Supercars series,” explained Team Manager Renato Russo. “Furthermore, his vast and varied experience with different kinds of cars in top-level international competitions makes us confident that he can help the team to meet the expectations we have for our TCR debut.”
Rangoni was also Italian F3 Champion in 1995, and has competed extensively in touring cars and the Renault Clio Eurocup.
“I had a good feeling during the test,” said Rangoni. “Though it was a brand new car, my first impression was very encouraging. The engine is great, has the power and the torque, but we have to work on braking and traction to optimize the balance.
“Racing at Singapore will put all of us at the same level, because no one knows the track. Although I’m no longer an apprentice, I am extremely excited.
“I feel honoured and lucky for this opportunity to develop a new car in a new championship and at a Formula 1 event!”
