BMW Motorsport’s Augusto Farfus took pole position for the 14th race of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) season at Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, setting the fastest time of 1:20.632 around the 3.696km track in sunny and dry conditions.
In what was another competitive qualifying session, the Brazilian stole pole position in the dying seconds, which provides a Team RBM front row for the race, as Tom Blomqvist was just 0.019 seconds behind.
“It is fantastic to be back on pole here in Oschersleben. We were competitive yesterday and qualified second, but then I dropped back a little in turn one,” said the 32-year-old.
“We have pole – and we want to take advantage of that and hopefully go on to take the win. It is fantastic for BMW Team RBM that both Tom Blomqvist and I start together on the front row. The team works so hard, and this is their reward.”
Points leader Pascal Wehrlein was fighting until the very end, rounding out the top three, who were separated by just 0.027 seconds. BMW dominated qualifying once again, with six of its M4 DTMs into the top ten.
António Félix da Costa took fourth ahead of Scotland’s Paul Di Resta, who was two of three Mercedes drivers in the top ten, with Christian Vietoris in eighth.
Defending champion Marco Wittmann and race 13 winner Timo Glock placed sixth and seventh respectively, with Bruno Spengler rounding out the top ten.
Miguel Molina repeated his peformance from Saturday, as the Spaniard took ninth for Audi, with the remainder of the Ingolstadt squad placing 13th.
Mike Rockenfeller will now start from 16th place, following his penalty from being the catalyst in the first corner incident in Saturday’s race, which promotes Jamie Green, Maxime Martin and Edoardo Mortara up a place.
Lucas Auer was one of three drivers that has their fair share of dramas during the 20-minute session, as the Austrian spun out and hit the barriers on his final flying lap attempt, but will start from 17th.
Mattias Ekström’s difficult weekend continues, as the Swede went off track just minutes before the end of the session, and will start from 18th.
Maximillian Götz starts behind the two-time champion, as the Mercedes driver went off track heading into pit lane, bouncing his way over the gravel and grass around the halfway mark.
Gary Paffett and Martin Tomczyk start 11th and 12th, with the former champions just under four tenths of seconds off the pace set by Farfus.
Tino Scheider, Nico Müller and Adrien Tambay will start from 20th, 21st and 23rd, with the Mercedes C63 AMGs of Daniel Juncadella and Robert Wickens will start from 22nd and last.
Wickens was handed a 10-place grid penalty for not adhering to pit lane speed limits in Moscow Raceway, as well as causing a collision in the first turn incident in race 13.
Race 14 starts at 1500 CEST (1400 BST), and will last for 60 minutes plus one lap, with all drivers having to make a mandatory pit stop.
