The ninth race of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) at the Red Bull Ring saw Audi Sport Team Abt’s Edoardo Mortara take his first win in the series since Zandvoort 2012.
The Franco-Italian led the race to the finish after Team Rosberg’s Jamie Green retired on the second lap of the race, due to a gearbox selection issue.
Mortara finished 1.792 seconds ahead of new points leader Pascal Wehrlein, who is the youngest to lead the standings in the series’ history.
“When I’m in front I can control the race,” explained the Audi driver. “My car was simply perfect today. I’m proud of this success and overjoyed. I’m hoping for this to continue to tomorrow.”
Scotland’s Paul di Resta rounded out the podium, followed by Christian Vietoris, who made it three Mercedes-Benz drivers in the top four.
Mattias Ekström made it into the top five, following on from a herculean battle between himself and lead BMW driver, Augusto Farfus. The two-time champion made his move in the infield on the final lap to keep himself within eight points of Wehrlein.
Gary Paffett took another welcome points finish in seventh, ahead of Mike Rockenfeller, Marco Wittmann and Adrien Tambay, who secured the last points finish of the afternoon.
Rockenfeller, Wittmann and Tambay were embroiled in a titanic battle, with the trio swapping positions are varying points out on track.
Daniel Juncadella had a solid finish in 11th place, ahead of Nico Müller, who potentially could have secured points this afternoon.
Other retirements this afternoon were Mercedes’ Robert Wickens and BMW’s Martin Tomczyk, with both drivers having to retire their cars into the garage following technical issues.
Wherein now leads the standings on 94 points, with Ekström a further eight points behind. Mortara now moves into third ahead of Jamie Green, which sees three Audi drivers in the top four overall.
Sunday’s action gets underway at 1100 CEST (1000 BST) with the morning warm-up.
