This afternoon’s Deutsche Tourenwagen masters (DTM) race at the Eurospeedway Lausitz saw Team Rosberg’s Jamie Green become the first driver to take two wins in a single weekend under the new format, as the Briton led a historic Audi Sport 1-2-3-4-5 finish.
The Brit finished ahead of Mattias Ekström, who took the lead early on in the race, and yesterday’s pole sitter Miguel Molina, who completed the podium. Timo Scheider was challenging his Spanish stablemate for the majority of the race, but would have to settle for fourth, ahead of Edoardo Mortara.
Daniel Juncadella was pushing hard, but the charging youngster tried a daring overtake on Mortara on the last lap into turn one which failed to pay off. Nevertheless he would be the highest placed Mercedes driver in sixth, ahead of Christian Vietoris, who started in 14th.
Maxime Martin was the only real highlight for BMW Motorsport, who suffered another disastrous weekend, as the Belgian finished eighth. Nico Müller took his first points of the season in ninth, with Mike Rockenfeller making it seven Audis in the top ten.
Rockenfeller was promoted to the final points-scoring place, due to Bruno Spengler being handed a drive-through penalty for contact with Adrien Tambay, which saw the Frenchman spin off and finish in 20th.
Martin Tomczyk and Timo Glock finished 12th and 13th respectively, ahead of last year’s winner, Pascal Wehrlein, who went off track whilst battling António Félix da Costa around the half way point.
Paul Di Resta’s weekend of woe continued, as the Scot finished way down the order along with Maxmilian Götz, whilst Marco Wittmann’s weekend went from bad to worse. The Team RMG driver went off track in the latter part of the race, and managed to finish ahead of Robert Wickens.
Early retirements included Tom Blomqvist on lap three, followed by Gary Paffett on lap 5 with a gearbox issue. Augusto Farfus suffered another bad weekend, as the Brazilian had to retire following contact with Di Resta, which affected the handling of his BMW M4 DTM, which was before Lucas Auer spun off into the gravel, bringing out the only Safety Car period of the day.
Green now extends his lead in the championship standing to 17 points, ahead of Ekström and Mortara, as Team Rosberg leads Team Abt Sportsline by six in the teams’ standings.
After four successive wins, Audi Sport now leads the manufacturer’s standings with 182 points, with Mercedes on 77 points and BMW languishing at the back of the pack with 44.
The focus now heads to the “Franconian Monaco,” The Norisring, in four weeks’ time, between the 26th and 28th of June, where Green has the advantage, based on his previous track record there.
