WestCoast Racing’s Gianni Morbidelli posted the fastest time in first practice for the TCR International Series at Monza, as Zengő Motorsport’s Davide Roda rolled his car, causing the session to be stopped early.
Morbidelli posted a time which was four tenths slower than his Friday best, but the Italian was nevertheless unchallenged on home soil, enjoying a 1.473 second advantage over team-mate Igor Skuz.
“We are satisfied, it was a good session for us,” said Morbidelli. “The Civic cars go well on this track, especially when temperatures are not high like this morning.
“I did not complete many flying laps, as I spent time running in the brake pads, but speed was immediately there when I started pushing. We will see how the weekend develops but it’s a good start.”
The WestCoast Honda’s enjoyed a dominant session, with Kevin Gleason going third fastest a further half a tenth back.
Championship leader Stefano Comini was the fastest SEAT driver in fourth, 1.574 seconds off the pace, ahead of team-mate Andrea Belicchi in fifth.
Liqui Moly Team Engstler duo Mikhail Grachev and Lorenzo Veglia were next up in sixth and seventh respectively, with the Craft-Bamboo Racing trio of Sergey Afanasyev, Pepe Priola and Jordi Gené completing the top ten.
The session was red-flagged with three minutes to go when Zengő Motorsport’s Davide Roda rolled his car at the second Lesmo corner, causing considerable damage to his SEAT León.
Tom Boardman was again at the wheel of Proteam Racing’s Ford Focus, improving his time from Friday by over three seconds, but still ending up over nine seconds off the pace after completing just six laps.
