Gianni Morbidelli completes perfect Monza weekend

WestCoast Racing’s Gianni Morbidelli completed a perfect weekend for himself and his Honda team, winning the second TCR International Series race at Monza ahead of Craft-Bamboo Racing’s Jordi Gené and Campos Racing’s Fernando Monje.

Morbidelli’s win, his third of the season, came from tenth on the grid in an action-packed race and sees the Italian become the first driver to take pole position and win both races in a single weekend.

Second went to Gené, who took the lead early on at the start of the race. The Spaniard then lost out to Morbidelli, who had made rapid progress through the pack in the early stages.

Morbidelli ended up in a fierce battle for the lead with Target Competition’s Stefano Comini and Campos Racing’s Monje, with the trio going three-wide on the main straight, before Morbidelli nudged Comini at the first chicane. Comini had the lead, ahead of Morbidelli, but it was all change just one lap later when Morbidelli emerged in front as a result of contact with Comini, sending the Swiss driver down to fifth on the final lap.

All of the events at the front allowed Monje to hold on to take an impressive first podium for Opel, ahead of a recovering Comini in fourth.

The second Target Competition car of Andrea Belicchi was fifth, despite having earlier been tapped into a half spin at the chicane on lap nine. Target Competition third driver Michel Nykjær failed to start the race as a result of his accident damage in race one.

WestCoast Racing’s Igor Skuz finished sixth, marking a season-best result for the Ukrainian driver, ahead of Zengő Motorsport’s Zsolt Szabó in seventh.

The SEAT’s of Liqui Moly Team Engstler’s Lorenzo Veglia and Mikhail Grachev were eighth and ninth, with pole sitter Antonio D’Amico completing the top ten, having been tapped into a spin by Belicchi before even getting the first corner.

Championship contender Pepe Oriola retired from the race after six laps due to suspension damage.

Like Nykjær, Craft-Bamboo Racing’s Sergey Afanasyev failed to start the race due to the damage he incurred in race one.
