Swedish touring car team West Coast Racing has announced plans to enter the new TC3 International Series in 2015, entering a trio of Honda Civics built by JAS Motorsport.
West Coast Racing has been one of the most successful touring car teams in Sweden, taking five drivers’ titles since 1998. The outfit had been traditionally associated with BMW, running the German cars between 1996 and 2011 before campaigning mock-BMWs in the more recent TTA-specification Swedish Touring Car Championship since 2012.
The campaign is planned to be run in tandem with their continuing programme in Sweden, where they field BMW silhouette cars in the STCC.
”We are very happy to announce our participation in a series that starts a new chapter for touring car racing”, said Dick Jönsson Wigrouth, team owner. “We have seen in recent years a struggle in many national and international touring car series but TC3 will be both affordable to teams and privateers with exciting racing and the chance for a national champion to break onto the international scene with the same machinery.
“We will visit 12 fantastic race tracks and countries in year one of the series with the huge bonus of racing in the same events as Formula 1 – no other touring car series offers such a complete package.
“This is a fantastic opportunity and also the perfect way for WestCoast Racing to expand our racing programme and add to our existing participation in the Swedish Touring car Championship.”
The TC3 International Series unveiled its provisional calendar last week which features at least four events in Asia, five events in Europe and two events in South America, with the season finale event yet to be confirmed. Three events (Malaysia, China and Singapore) will feature as support races to F1.
