Colin Turkington headed eBay Motors team-mate Rob Collard at the top of the times in first practice for the British Touring Car Championship at Knockhill, as MG’s Jason Plato ended the session in third.
Turkington hit the top of the times after 23 minutes at a cloudy but dry Knockhill circuit, posting a time of 52.422 seconds before improving to a 51.870. Team-mate Collard went second fastest, but was unable to match the championship leaders time, ending up 0.404 seconds adrift.
Plato spent much of the session at the bottom end of the times, before the former double champion posted a time just over half a second slower than Turkington with ten minutes remaining.
Local hero Gordon Shedden was fourth in his Honda, ahead of reigning champion Andrew Jordan in fifth.
Sam Tordoff made it two MGs inside the top six, ending the session ahead of Team BMR’s Alain Menu. The Swiss had been one of the pace-setters in the first half of the session, and was in the top ten throughout.
Nick Foster ensured all three BMWs ended the session in the top ten in eighth, with Rob Austin and Matt Neal completing the top ten, the latter having spent the first half of the session with Plato towards the bottom of the times.
Local Glynn Geddie finished the session in a strong 13th position, having been inside the top ten for much of the session, dropping down the order only in the final ten minutes. Geddie was the final driver within a second of Turkington’s pace. Jack Clarke in 14th also enjoyed a strong session.
There were problems for Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram towards the end of the session, with the Toyota driver stopping on track with suspected technical problems.
Second practice gets underway at 12:10 BST (13:10 CEST).
