BMW’s Maxime Martin scored his first-ever pole position in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters at the Moscow Raceway in Russia, beating BMW stable-mate Bruno Spengler and Audi’s Nico Müller to pole.
Belgian Martin had been strong throughout qualifying, posting the fifth fastest time in Q1 before topping both the Q2 and Q3 sessions. The 28-year-old was a mere 0.019 seconds faster than Spengler in Q3 after posting the fastest time with just over a minute remaining.
Behind Spengler and Müller for the fifth race of the season will be reigning champion Mike Rockenfeller, who had earlier been fastest of all in Q1.
Audi’s Adrien Tambay continued his 100% record of qualifying in the top ten in 2014 with the fifth fastest time. BMW’s Augusto Farfus will line up alongside the Frenchman after qualifying in sixth.
Championship leader Marco Wittmann was seventh in his BMW, ahead of Audi’s Miguel Molina in eighth. Four BMW and four Audi drivers made it through to the final segment of qualifying, whilst Mercedes continued to struggle on purpose-built race tracks.
Audi’s Jamie Green qualified as the top Brit in ninth, missing out on Q3 by 0.013 seconds, whilst Timo Glock completed the top ten for BMW.
Swede Mattias Ekström failed to make it through to Q3 for the third time in 2014, despite the Team Abt Sportsline Audi driver having earlier been second and third fastest in the opening two practice sessions respectively.
The top Mercedes driver was Norisring winner Robert Wickens in 14th position, with Daniel Juncadella just behind in 15th. It was a difficult qualifying session for Mercedes’ former champions Paul di Resta and Gary Paffett, however, as the Scot managed just 18th and Paffett failed to get out of Q1, ending up in 21st on the grid for Sunday’s race.
Round 5 of the 2014 DTM takes place at 15:33 MST (13:33 CEST, 12:33 BST).
