Marco Wittmann topped the testing times for BMW Team RMG on the first day of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters final official tests before the start of the 2014 season.
Wittmann was also fastest in the morning session, posting a time of 1:33.769. The German then improved his time by seven tenths in the afternoon session to beat Audi’s Mattias Ekström to the top time by 0.232 seconds. Ekström completed the most laps of any driver, touring the Hockenheimring 141 times throughout the day.
“That was a really good day of testing,” said Wittmann. “We have gone through our program – and were still fast with it. First place in the ranking is nice, but of course only a snapshot in time. More importantly, everything worked great. This also applies to working with my new team – we are getting to know each other better and harmonise together.”
Ekström headed a quartet of Audi drivers all within a second of the overall pace, with Timo Scheider third fastest ahead of Edoardo Mortara and newcomer Nico Müller.
BMW’s Joey Hand in sixth was the only other driver within a second of Wittmann’s outright pace.
The top driver for Mercedes-Benz was Spaniard Daniel Juncadella in seventh, whilst the returning Paul Di Resta and youngster Christian Vietoris propped up the timesheets in 10th and 11th positions respectively.
