MG’s Sam Tordoff secured his second-ever victory in the second British Touring Car Championship race at Donington Park as MG again took a 1-2 finish.
Tordoff, who finished second in the day’s opening race, got the better of Jason Plato away from the line to lead into the first corner. The 25-year-old, whose birthday was on Saturday, then lead a race which included two safety car periods to head the second MG 1-2 of the day. Plato finished 1.028 seconds adrift of Tordoff and takes over the lead at the top of the championship.
Gordon Shedden finished in third for Honda, having battled hard with Pirtek Racing’s Andrew Jordan for the final podium position. Jordan held on to finish fourth, despite late-race pressure from the second Civic Tourer of Matt Neal in fifth.
Colin Turkington finished in sixth, not making the expectedly strong start which the BMW’s have been accustomed to. Indeed the Northern Irishman was overtaken by team-mate Rob Collard at the start, but Collard failed to finish the race after spinning off approaching the Old Hairpin on lap four.
Mat Jackson finished in seventh as the top Airwaves Racing driver, ahead of Árón Smith and Dave Newsham, who finished in ninth after a close battle with Jack Goff late in the race. Tom Ingram finished in tenth after benefitting from the battle between Newhsam and Goff ahead.
Several drivers failed to finish the race due to incidents, with Alain Menu the first victim on the opening lap when the Swiss driver went wide onto the grass exiting the Old Hairpin and then spun across the approaching pack. Incredibly no one hit Menu, but he was out of the race.
Two early safety car periods were called for, with the first for Menu’s off. The second was called for as a result of an incident between James Cole and Robb Holland. Both drivers were taking avoidance of an incident between Rob Austin and Chris Stockton exiting Redgate and made contact, pitching both heavily into the concrete wall on the exit of the corner with both cars suffering significant damage.
