Sebastian Loeb opened his account for Citroen in the World Touring Car Championship after winning from ninth on the grid, with team-mate Jose Maria Lopez finishing second.
A lengthy suspension after Tom Coronel, Mehdi Bennani and Yvan Muller had an incident away from the line meant that the race was resumed behind the Safety Car and after two laps, the race went live again and Bennani led the field away while Loeb continued his climb up the order.
Loeb survived the opening lap melee which saw his team-mate Muller taken out by Coronel, who had been tagged into the wall by Bennani who was trying to slide down the inside. Muller collected the rear end of the ROAL Motorsport Chevrolet Cruze and caused extensive damage to the car.
Bennani was awarded a drive through penalty for his role in the collision and Loeb drafted past to inherit the race lead and he’d never concede the advantage.
While Loeb was storming away at the front of the field, race one winner Lopez was closing on Hugo Valente’s Campos Racing Chevrolet Cruze, who in turn was on the tail of Monteiro. Lopez drove past Valente on the straight and then closed in on Monteiro.
Just before the second safety car was called for due to the second Campos Racing car of Serbian Dusan Borkovic, who stopped out on track on the start/finish straight.
Once the race got underway for a second time, Loeb and Lopez drove away from Valente while the main entertainment came from local hero Bennani, who was recovering from his penalty earlier in the race and eventually finished fifth, just 0.026s behind Tom Chilton, who had worked his way up the order.
Bennani was later excluded from the race for the earlier incident with Coronel at the start.
Mikhail Kozlovskiy secured his best finish to date in the WTCC as he secured a top six finish in the #14 LADA Granta, with former Alfa Romeo driver Gianni Morbidelli finishing seventh. The TC2T class concluded the top 10, with Franz Engstler taking his second class victory of the weekend.
After the second race, Lopez leads the way from Loeb by a single point while Muller has dropped from third to fifth.
Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2014 campaign take place at Paul Ricard, France next weekend (19/20 April).
