Most of the top times came within the first 45 minutes of the session when the track was at its driest, with the session thereafter being affected by intermittent rain showers which prevented drivers improving their times.

Honda’s Shedden was second-fastest in the larger Civic Tourer – with the Scot finishing the session a mere 0.001 seconds slower than Jordan’s smaller Civic hatchback. BTCC returnee Menu proved that he has lost none of his speed by posting the third fastest time in the Team BMR Volkswagen Passat.

Adam Morgan showed that the new Ciceley Racing Mercedes-Benz A-Class has potential by posting the fourth-fastest time, 0.227 seconds off the top time.

MG’s Sam Tordoff was fifth fastest, whilst team-mate Jason Plato finished the session down in 22nd after failing to post a time when the track was dry and only managing a time almost nine seconds off the pace.

Matt Neal was sixth fastest, ensuring both new Civic Tourers were inside the top ten. Árón Smith reinforced the pace of the Volkswagen Passat with the seventh fastest time.

Colin Turkington made it five former champions inside the top ten in eighth, finishing the session as the top BMW driver. Fellow eBay Motors driver rob Collard and Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram completed the top ten.

There were off-track excursions for both Shedden and BTCC rookie Jack Clarke during the session, with the Crabbie’s Racing driver admitting to have ‘bit a large mole hill’ during the session, damaging the sump on his car.

Several drivers who were present at the media day did not take to the track at all during the afternoon. Lea Wood admitted that his new Toyota Avensis was still being completed, whilst Rotek Racing’s Robb Holland opted not to take to the track and instead focus on testing the new Audi S3 Saloon later in the week.

Neither of the Protons of Dan Welch or Ollie Jackson took part in the test session, with Team BMR’s Jack Goff and BTC Racing’s Chris Stockton also failing to post a time in the four-hour session.
