Rob Huff will combine his 2014 World Touring Car Championship campaign with selected outings in the Starworks ORECA FML09 LMPC car in the United SportsCar Championship.
The announcement means that the 2012 WTCC Champion will have a full 12 round campaign in the LADA Sport Lukoil LADA Granta as well outings in the Starworks car.
The USCC comes after the American Le Mans Series and the Rolex Sports Car Series merged and Huff will make his debut for the team over the 3-5 January, when the official ‘Roar before the Rolex 24’ takes place at Daytona International Speedway.
The traditional Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona International Speedway leads to the 12 Hour race at Sebring in March and the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on the 4th October.
Watkins Glen also hosts a 6 hour endurance race, the week after the final WTCC event in Europe at Spa-Francorchamps.
Huff returned to the endurance race scene after helping Rotek Racing take the victory in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill in December, and the sporadic outings with Starworks will help Huff develop his career in endurance racing.
“It’s really exciting to be joining Starworks Motorsport for its 2014 TUDOR USCC campaign and I believe prototype sportscars will compliment my full-time efforts in the FIA WTCC perfectly.
“I’m looking forward to pitting myself against such a vast mix of world-renowned drivers from the highest echelons of single-seater and sportscar racing – it will provide me with a real benchmark for my own performances – and it will be particularly as part of the newly-unified Grand-Am and American Le Mans championships – the USSC – which has massive potential.”
Joining Huff in the team is fellow Brit Sam Bird, who finished runner up in the 2013 GP2 Series for Russian Time.
Starworks Motorsport team owner, Peter Baron, is looking forward to Huff joining the driving ranks in 2014: “I’ve been following Rob’s racing, especially since he beat Ryan (Dalziel) to the prestigious BRDC Gold Star award in 2012! He is a proven winner, a World Champion no less, so to have him with us in 2014 is great news.
“I also love to bring new talent to USA sportscar racing and am eager to share our passion for it at Starworks. We’re excited to welcome Rob to the team at the “Roar” this week – he joins at an exciting time; the start of the new united series and a new era of sportscar racing in America.”
