It was Austin who led off the start after he jumped pole man Andrew Jordan and Mat Jackson from his third place grid slot. Jackson also got a jump on Jordan, who began to hold a train of cars behind him.
Having held position off the line, Shedden quickly dispatched of Jordan and set his sights on Jackson’s second place, passing the Airwaves driver into the chicane at the end of the second lap.
Initially it looked as though the Scot would catch the Audi driver, but Austin weathered the storm and strung a number of quick laps together to pull away and eventually win by 3.3 seconds, the first victory for an Audi in the series since 1997.
Colin Turkington stole the final podium spot from Jackson to claw back more ground in the championship battle, with Jackson scoring another fine result in fourth ahead of Sam Tordoff, who put in a stellar drive to rise 11 places from his grid slot and beat teammate Jason Plato.
It was a mixed race for new championship leader Andrew Jordan; having started on pole, he plummeted down the order and struggled with ballast throughout the race, eventually finishing in eighth. He did, however, see nearest championship challenger Matt Neal retire while in contention for a podium, and Jordan now leads the championship by 19 points from Shedden, who moved two points ahead of Neal.
Behind Jordan, Tom Onslow-Cole scored his first points in the Airwaves Ford Focus in ninth, while Howard Fuller looked set for good points before going straight on at Deene, eventually recovering to 17th place.
Lea Wood inched closer to claiming the Jack Sears Trophy, after another class win ahead of David Nye. Closest challenger Liam Griffin retired once more, suffering a puncture two laps from the finish after an entertaining battle with BTCC newcomer And Wilmot.
