Aiden Moffat is set to make history by becoming the the youngest driver to have competed in the British Touring Car Championship, after it was announced that he will race a Finesse Motorsport Chevrolet Cruze for the remainder of the season.
The teenager, 16, will compete from Knockhill in the same Cruze that Joe Girling raced with in the first half of the season, with Finesse Motorsport having intially loaned the machine out to the M247 Racing squad.
The move will be a step up for both parties; despite having run in the Clio Cup on the BTCC support bill, the Knockhill meeting will be Finesse’s first taste of BTCC action, while Moffat has been competing in the Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup and Scottish Ford Fiesta championship this season, after three years of karting.
Speaking to BTCC.net, Moffat was excited at the prospect of racing in the BTCC, particularly at a circuit he is familiar with.
“I am just so excited to be on the big stage racing in front of thousands of fans at the circuits and millions more watching on TV. I know the Knockhill circuit inside and out so that should help with my debut, but I am simply going to enjoy it,” Said Moffat.
“To be told I am the youngest ever driver in the BTCC just adds to the excitement to be honest, so I really can’t wait to get out there.”
Team Boss Neil Giddings also expressed his delight about the opportunity to compete in the series.
“We’ve been excited by the opportunity to run in the BTCC and it has been the plan since we purchased the car early in the year,” He said.
“Time will tell how Aiden gets on but we haven’t put any pressure on him and he’s knows Knockhill well, so we’re all looking forward to the challenge.”
Moffat will break the record previously held by Tom Chilton, who scored 12 wins in the championship before moving into the World Touring Car Championship.
