Tom Chilton had been the session’s early pace-setter, before bamboo-engineering’s Alex MacDowall moved to the top of the times in the middle of the 30-minute practice.
The session saw a brief red-flag period when René Münnich spun out into the gravel, scuppering Muller’s attempts at a flying lap. The Frenchman was again delayed when the session resumed due to Münnich’s team-mate Rob Huff experiencing technical problems in front of the triple champion. Muller eventually posted a flying lap in the closing minutes to go second fastest.
MacDowall’s time remained good enough for third overall, ensuring a Chevrolet 1-2-3 ahead of qualifying.
Tiago Monteiro put his works’ Honda fourth fastest, ahead of the semi-independently-entered Zengő Honda of Norbert Michelisz.
Local driver José María López again impressed, posting the sixth fastest time as the top BMW pilot. The Argentinian was seven tenths faster than the next-quickest BMW driver.
Pepe Oriola, Gabriele Tarquini, James Thompson and James Nash completed the top ten.
Mikhail Kozlovskiy put in a strong showing in the second works’ LADA to end the session in 12th overall, just three tenths a second slower than his vastly more experienced team-mate Thompson.
Qualifying takes place at 19:45 BST (20:45 CEST; 15:45 ART).
