Following his heavy crash in the second World Touring Car Championship race, Honda driver Gabriele Tarquini is to spend the night in hospital.
Tarquini, 51, crashed out of the second race of the day when contact from Yvan Muller sent him spearing into the barriers on the exit of turn two. As Tarquini’s Honda Civic hit the barriers side in it bounced back into the track, with the BMW of Franz Engstler collecting the Italian.
When exiting his car, Tarquini was clearly seen to be in pain and was taken to the Budapest Military Hospital complaining of back pains wearing a neck brace. German Engstler was also taken to the same hospital but was later discharged.
Although initially discharged, Tarquini has been kept in overnight after the doctors changed their mind. The former champion will be kept under observation until the morning.
Doctos have ruled out cracked ribs and expect that the Italian is suffering from bruising.
