Dane Nykjær took the lead of the race from early leader Tarquini on the seventh lap of the race, just before a lengthy safety car period which was caused by Tiago Monteiro suffering yet another crash in his Honda.
Tarquini held on to second to score the Honda team’s best-ever result in the WTCC, although the Italian will be disappointed not to have taken the win.
Brit James Nahs held on to finish in third, having started second, to score his first-ever podium in the WTCC since he made his début at the start of 2012. Nash did not have an easy race though – after challenging for the lead early on, he was forced to defend heavily from eventual fourth-placed finisher Yvan Muller.
Reigining champion Rob Huff took fifth, after a close duel with former team-mate Muller that saw him miss out on fourth by just 0.024 seconds. Alex MacDowall finished sixth, ahead of Marc Basseng, who also had a strong race.
Pepe Oriola, Tom Coronel and James Thompson completed the top ten points-paying positions.
There was a lengthy safety car period between laps 8 and 12 due to Monteiro again crashing into the Marrakech barriers, ripping off his front-left wheel. Norbert Michelisz retired after more technical problems with his Honda, whilst Tom Chilton had to retire with overheating problems, likely after he went into the back of team-mate Muller early in the race.
Following his crash in the morning warm-up, Tom Boardman is unable to start either of the two races in Morocco, however it is believed that the team will be able to repair the car before the next meeting in Slovakia.
Round 4 takes place at 16:30 WET (17:30 GMT, 18:30 CET).
