Having scored more points in the opening five races than during the whole of 2012, Adam Morgan admits that he is happy to be ‘playing it safe’ as he challenges the established BTCC order.
In just the opening five races of the season, Morgan has already amassed more points than he did during the whole of the 2013. He has scored a career-best finish of fourth at Brands Hatch, following it up with two fifth-placed finishes in the opening races of the day at Donington Park.
“I can’t really complain with two fifths to be honest,” said Morgan to TouringCars.Net. “In that last race I was stuck behind Neal and really expected Plato to at some point take someone off, which never really happened. I was quite happy watching, waiting for the right moment, which never arose.”
Morgan admitted that although he had the pace to stay with the leading quartet, he had to back off half-way through the race due to problems with his oil temperature rising.
“Because I was stuck behind Neal for quite a long time my oil temperature went quite high so I took a couple of laps to just get some clear air,” he added. “I got left behind a little bit but once that came back down I managed to catch up again which was really promising.”
Morgan admitted that he is pleasantly surprised to have be experiencing an up-turn in form in 2013, which leaves him sixth in the championship standings.
“It’s a bit of a turnaround from last year! I’m definitely enjoying it. I’m just keeping it calm and safe. You’ve got to be in at the end to keep the points ticking over. In race one and two I thought I’d play it safe, stick behind people and keep it on the track and so far it’s worked.
“In race three now we’re on the soft tyres. I think it’s going to be a good race. The quick boys are behind us but they’ve got a lot of ballast to carry, so I’m looking forward to it.”
