Sam Tordoff joins MG for 2013

Sam Tordoff has today been confirmed as team-mate to Jason Plato at the MG KX Momentum Racing team, in an announcement made at MG’s headquarters in Birmingham.

The trainee accountant, who has spent the last four years racing on the TOCA package in the supporting Renault Clio Cup and Porsche Carrera Cup GB has previous experience of racing in the British Touring Car Championship in the 2010 season finale, at the wheel of a 888 Vauxhall Vectra – the same team who runs the factory MG squad.

Tordoff is one of the KX Akademy drivers for 2013 and is the only driver who has been moved into the BTCC, alongside his mentor Plato.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic,” explained Tordoff to BTCC.net.

“It has taken a lot of hard work to get here but the timing is right and everything is in place for me to show what I can do. I’ve been racing on the TOCA package for four years now and reaching the BTCC was always the sole intention.

“But to sign for the best team, with the best car and to have the best team-mate is just unbelievable. I’m just thankful to MG and KX for the opportunity.”

In his four years on the BTCC Support package, he finished eighth in his maiden Clio Cup campaign in 2009, taking a victory along the way while the 2010 campaign saw him finish 3rd overall with 2 wins and 12 podium finishes – he also set a new lap record at Oulton Park.

His two years in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB saw him race at the Nurburgring Nordschleife in the Porsche World Cup as well as making his debut in the Porsche Supercup at Silverstone, alongside the British Grand Prix.

He finished 7th in his maiden Porsche Campaign before finishing 3rd in 2012, with four victories to his name.

Looking ahead to his first full campaign in the BTCC, the 23yr old from Leeds is hoping that the 2013 campaign will be a successful one for him and the team.

“I haven’t set any targets as such, but then I won’t be making any excuses just because it’s my first season,” added Tordoff, who secured a top ten finish on the BTCC debut. “The team proved this car could win races in its first year, so I expect to hugely competitive.”
