Darryl O’Young: ‘The results are not there’

Darryl O’Young secured another Independent’s points finish inRound 22 of the 2012 World Touring Car Championship, a result which leaves him 8^th in the Yokohama Independents’ heading to Macau.

Having missed out on the second part of qualifying by 0.05s, O’Young lined up 14^th for both races at the Shanghai International Circuit. He was disappointed to miss out on the top 12 in front of his home crowd.

“Qualifying was very close and competitive. On my second run my lap was decent but I missed Q2 by 0.05 seconds.  This meant I missed the reverse grid in my home races so that was very disappointing,” explains the Hong Kong racer.

Round 21 saw O’Young retire on the opening lap after a number of incidents ahead of him and he ended up damaging the engine cooling system.

“The first lap was absolute mayhem. I was hit into turn one which cost me to lose several positions. Then on the same lap, some cars spun ahead and I crash into the car in front of me. This damaged my engine cooling and I had to stop the race,” continued O’Young.

The second race of the weekend saw O’Young climb the order to 11^th before losing one position to cross the line 12^th and 6^th in the Yokohama Independents’, a result which meant he scored another three points and continued his points scoring form – he has scored in 7 out of the 8 flyaway races since the summer break.

“I had an average start which cost me a few positions. There were lots of good fights and I made it up to P11. Some contact later dropped me down to P15 and I was able to recover.”

O’Young sums up his weekend and is looking forward to the season finale around the streets of Macau over the 15^th – 18^th November, where double points are awarded to the Yokohama Independents’ runners.

“I damaged the engine cooling of my car in the opening round, it was fixed and I began race two. There were a lot of good fights in the race but unfortunately the results are not there to show it. I am really looking forward to Macau and I will give everything to get a good result for my fans,” concluded the #20 bamboo engineering racer.
