Wiechers-Sport have announced that Canadian Touring Car Championship race winner Gary Kwok is to drive it’s sole BMW 320 TC in the series finale in Macau. Kwok is a three-time winner in the 2011 Canadian series and will be making his WTCC début around the streets of the Guia circuit.
Wiechers had until this announcement not been present on the provisional entry list for the legendary Guia race, such was the uncertainty over their driver line-up.
Kwok will also be the first Canadian driver to take part in a WTCC race weekend. The Canadian is looking forward to his first taste of the series and has previously driven around the Guia circuit, but not raced it in a touring car.
“The WTCC is a world famous racing series and Wiechers is a very experienced and successful team,” said Kwok to German publication Motorsport-Total. “Macau is for me my favorite track. For me, it is indeed a dream come true.
“It is certainly not easy, since this is my first time in this championship and the first time competing with the BMW. It’s a big challenge, but I love challenges.”
Team Manager Dominik Greiner was pleased to welcome Kwok into the team, becoming Wiechers fourth driver this season.
“I am delighted to be able to welcome Gary into our team,” said Greiner. “We are going to provide him with a perfect car in Macau. As a newcomer he will not have it easy, but he will receive every support possible from us to settle in quickly.”
Thomas Schiemann, Wiechers-Sport technical director, echoed Greiner’s comments and believes that Kwok will settle in well in the WTCC. “With Gary, we will write a new chapter in Macau. He brings with him enough experience from other racing series. I think we will be very successful with Gary.”
