With just one week to go until the British Touring Car Championship heads to Rockingham Motor Speedway Triple Eight Race engineering has admitted that it does not know if it will be running a second car.
The former multiple champions started 2011 with two cars for both James Nash and Tony Gilham. However Gilham had to step down from his race seat prior to last weekend’s Knockhill meeting. Despite this the team were still able to field a second Vauxhall Vectra for BTCC rookie Árón Smith in a one-off deal.
However with that deal being only for the one meeting, and Smith returning to the Renault Clio Cup in which he is a championship contender, Triple Eight boss Ian Harrison has admitted that they still have a seat to fill.
“I guess it is another sign of the times when a good car is likely to remain idle on a race weekend,” admitted Harrison. “Árón Smith took points with us on his BTCC debut at Knockhill but is back now in the Clio Championship where we very much hope he wins the title.
“We’ve not been short of enquiries for the seat but unfortunately finding somebody with suitable budget has so far proved to be elusive. It isn’t too late though and interested parties’ should contact me or Les Jones without delay.”
