Team Aon plan to run a third car from Snetterton onwards, according to this week’s Motorsport News. Alongside regular drivers Tom Chilton and Tom Onslow-Cole, the front-running squad hopes to put out another of its LPG-powered Ford Focus ST’s to aid it’s bid for the overall title this year.
Andy Constable, the team’s commercial manager, told MN: “It was always our plan to put another car out there and we are in a position to do it now. We are in advance talks with two drivers about the seat and we will conclude those shortly.”
With Tom Onslow-Cole currently 4th in the driver’s championship, only 22 points off the lead, and Tom Chilton in 9th the team has plenty to play for in the second half of the season.
The Snetterton rounds of the championship take place on the weekend of the 7/8 August, six weeks after the Croft meeting, allowing the team plenty of time to focus on building the third car. Traditionally the BTCC takes an extended break in the peak of the Summer, this year partly due to the World Cup.
